How to play baccarat — step by step

  1. 1

    Choose your bet

Select Banker, Player, or Tie (avoid Tie). You can also add side bets (Banker Pair, Player Pair) though these have high house edges.

  2. 2

    Cards are dealt

Two cards are dealt face-up to both the Player hand and the Banker hand. Card values: Ace = 1, 2–9 = face value, 10/J/Q/K = 0. Totals above 9 drop the tens digit (15 = 5).

  3. 3

    Third card rules (automatic)

If either hand totals 8 or 9 (a "natural"), no more cards are drawn. Otherwise, the third-card rules determine if Player or Banker draws a third card. This is automatic — you make no decisions.

  4. 4

    Hand closest to 9 wins

Whichever hand is closest to 9 wins. If equal (Tie), Tie bet pays out; Banker and Player bets push (returned). Banker winning with your Banker bet pays 1:1 minus 5% commission.

  5. 5

    Commission on Banker wins

Because the Banker bet wins more often (50.68% of non-tie hands), a 5% commission is taken from Banker wins to offset the advantage. No Commission Baccarat variants exist but pay less on Banker 6.

Online baccarat NZ — FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Baccarat is a card comparison game where you bet on one of three outcomes: Player wins, Banker wins, or Tie. Two hands are dealt (Player hand and Banker hand) from a shoe of 6–8 decks. You are not playing against the dealer — you are betting on which hand gets closest to 9. Card values: Ace = 1, 2–9 = face value, 10/J/Q/K = 0. If a hand total exceeds 9, only the second digit counts (e.g. 15 = 5). Third card rules are automatically applied by the dealer/software. No skill is required — you simply choose your bet (Player, Banker or Tie) and the game plays itself.

Banker bet: 1.06% house edge (98.94% RTP) — lowest house edge of the three bets. This is one of the best bets in any casino game. Player bet: 1.24% house edge (98.76% RTP). Tie bet: 14.36% house edge (85.64% RTP) — avoid this bet. The Banker bet has a 5% commission deducted from winning payouts to compensate for its statistical advantage. Always bet Banker — it has the lowest house edge. Never bet Tie as a regular strategy; it is a sucker bet.

Punto Banco is the standard version of baccarat — the most common format at NZ online casinos. "Punto" (Player) and "Banco" (Banker) are the two hands. The dealing and third-card rules are fixed (no player decisions beyond choosing the bet). Mini Baccarat is the same game with lower table limits and a single dealer, played on a smaller table. At NZ online casinos, the distinction is mostly cosmetic: both use the same rules, house edges and payouts. Most "baccarat" games at NZ casinos are Punto Banco format.

Speed Baccarat (Evolution Gaming): Same rules as classic baccarat but each round completes in about 27 seconds (vs 48 seconds standard). Cards are dealt face-up immediately. Higher volume of rounds per hour for players who want faster sessions. Lightning Baccarat (Evolution Gaming): A Punto Banco variant where Lightning Multipliers are randomly applied to winning Player and Banker bets — multipliers of 2×, 3×, 4×, 5× or 8× on top of standard payouts. Lightning Baccarat has a slightly higher house edge (2.85% Banker, 2.87% Player) due to a higher commission, but the multiplier potential is popular with NZ players.

No betting system or strategy can overcome the house edge in baccarat over the long run. The Martingale (doubling after losses), Fibonacci, Paroli and Labouchere systems are all mathematically equivalent to flat betting over enough rounds — they change variance, not expected value. The closest thing to a baccarat "strategy" is: always bet Banker (1.06% house edge), never bet Tie (14.36% house edge), set a session budget and stop when you reach it. Card counting is theoretically possible in baccarat but the edge gained is tiny (<0.01%) and impractical in live online baccarat.

For live dealer baccarat: Ice Casino has the widest live baccarat lobby including Speed Baccarat, Lightning Baccarat, Infinite Baccarat and classic tables. V.Vegas offers over 80 live tables across all variants. FastPay Casino has a strong live baccarat selection with fast streaming quality. Bitdreams (HeroPartners group) and Casino Heroes offer Evolution Gaming live baccarat. For RNG baccarat: all NZ casinos offer multiple software versions of Punto Banco and Mini Baccarat from Pragmatic Play, NetEnt and Evolution.

RNG Baccarat: minimum NZ$0.10–1 per hand, maximum NZ$500–1,000. Live Dealer Baccarat: typical minimum NZ$1–5, typical maximum NZ$2,000–10,000 depending on the table tier. VIP/High Roller live baccarat tables: NZ$50+ minimum, NZ$50,000+ maximum at major casinos. Evolution's Salon Privé Baccarat is invitation-only with table limits up to €100,000. For NZ players at standard live tables, the NZ$2,000–5,000 maximum is sufficient for most play styles.

Infinite Baccarat (Evolution Gaming): A side-bet variant where unlimited players bet on a single baccarat hand — no seat limits, no waiting. Standard Punto Banco rules apply. Popular for high-volume periods when regular tables fill up. Baccarat Squeeze: The dealer slowly bends the cards as they are revealed, creating dramatic tension. This is a presentational style rather than a rules change — the game maths are identical to classic baccarat. Available at Ice Casino, V.Vegas and FastPay Casino through Evolution Gaming's live studio.

No betting system eliminates the house edge. Set a session budget before playing. Free NZ help: Problem Gambling Foundation NZ 0800 664 262. Responsible gambling →
